Where in the world will you find car guards? South Africa, that's where! And what do they do? They show up as you are about to leave and hover around expecting payment for having guarded your car. They sometimes make a show of things and direct you out of your parking space to encourage you to want to pay them. Most often they are nice enough people who have created a opportunity for themselves to make money. Your car would have been perfectly fine and you could have navigated your way out the parking space without any difficulty. It's fair to assume that not a whole lot of guarding goes on. Yet we seem to have gotten into a habit of paying car guards. But ... if you act as if you weren't going to get into your car then you will probably escape their attention.
